After more than 38 years in office, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen announced on Wednesday that he would step down on August 22 and hand the reins of government to his eldest son, Hun Manet.
The longest-serving living prime minister in the world declared in a televised address on the state-run National Television of Cambodia (TVK) that “Hun Manent will become the prime minister in just over three weeks.”
According to Hun Sen, the National Assembly will meet for the first time on August 21 under the patronage of King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia, and on August 22 the new five-year term government formed by Hun Manet will be sworn in. He added that the new cabinet would be made up of young and energetic leaders in order to maintain the country’s peace and political stability during the upcoming power transition.
Because he is still the leader of the dominant Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), Hun Sen stated that he will continue to hold political power, but he will not meddle in the decision-making of the new administration. Hun Sen, 70, declared that he would assume the office of Senate President following the Senate Election on February 25 of the following year. His remarks were made following the CPP’s resounding victory in the seventh general election, which was held on Sunday to choose the 125-seat national assembly’s new members for the 2023–2028 period.
The CPP received nearly 6.4 million votes, or 82.3% of the total valid vote of 7.77 million, according to the preliminary results announced by the national election committee (NEC) on Wednesday. The Funcinpec Party, led by Prince Norodom Chakravuth, received 716443 votes, or 9.22% of the total valid votes.
